The word ammonite is derived from the name of the Greek God "Ammon", that appeared with ram's horns on his head. Members of the phylum Cephalopoda, these are the distant ancestors of the chambered nautilus. The animal that lived in these shells looked something like a Squid or an Octopus, with tentacles for grasping it's food and moving around the ocean floor. It is speculated that Ammonites ate Trilobite and other small animals. There are several different species of Ammonite. Some were found in Morocco up to 6 feet across in size, while others never got any bigger then a dime.
